Declines in groundwater levels in all villages are significant and, because most areas are underlain by hard impermeable rock, well yields tend to decline with depth. As a result, efforts to deepening existing wells are generally ineffective and rarely result in owners being able to maintain constant levels of irrigation. This has impacted the livelihood of dalit families adversely as they are unskilled and have traditionally dependent on agriculture.

Roof water harvesting (RWH) is an option, which has been adopted in many areas of the world where conventional water supply systems have failed to meet the needs of the people.
In the year 2006-08, DISHa undertook the RWH project and constructed 450 roof top harvesting units of 2000 liters capacity for individual households with support from Arghyam Trust, Bangalore.
